Sedation Dentistry in Calgary, Alberta

A sedative is a substance that alters the body’s physical or mental perception of certain sensations. As such, it is important to consult with a dental professional to discuss the possible outcomes associated with the different types of sedation. The main types of sedation that are offered by our Calgary dentists at Richmond Dental are nitrous oxide sedation, oral sedation, and IV conscious sedation.
Nitrous Oxide Sedation
Nitrous oxide sedation may be better known by its name “laughing gas.” A dental professional such as your Calgary dentist at Richmond Dental will administer the gas via a facemask. The dosage is monitored and controlled by a dental professional during the procedure, and they are able to make adjustments as necessary. After a period of time in which the patient inhales the gas, they will typically start to feel sensations of euphoria as well as reduced sensitivity to physical input such as pain. Once the procedure is complete, the facemask is removed and the patient is encouraged to inhale repeatedly to filter the nitrous oxide out of their body.
Oral Sedation
Oral sedation typically involves taking an oral sedative approximately one hour prior to your visit. The sedative typically takes longer to start affecting you than nitrous oxide or IV sedation, but it is timed so the effects should be taking hold during your procedure. Since it is more difficult to make changes to the effects of an oral sedative once it has been taken, you might want to take some additional precautions with this method. You likely will want to arrange a ride home as you should not operate any sort of heavy machinery under the effect of any substance that alters your mental state.
IV Sedation
IV sedation involves the use of a sedative that is given intravenously. The substance reduces sensations of pain and anxiety during the procedure. This procedure is done by administering the substance into the system more directly than the other methods mentioned. It is best to make yourself aware of the effects this can have on you, especially when having a substance introduced directly into the body.
