Crowns

Porcelain crowns are performed regularly at Richmond Dental clinic in Calgary. Crowns are a form of “indirect” restoration since the crown itself is fabricated outside the mouth whereas a bonded filling is created by layering directly on to the tooth. At our dental clinic in Calgary, our dentists offer years of experience in dental crowns, otherwise known as dental caps, since they act as a “hat” that sits on top of an existing tooth. Crowns are more effective than fillings due to their inherent strength. If a tooth’s original structure is too compromised to support a filling, our dentists can provide options which may include other cosmetic services like a dental implant.

Crowns, or dental caps, are used for both restorative and cosmetic dentistry. Crowns can help enhance the visual appearance of discolored, chipped or otherwise traumatized teeth, and can also be used to rebuild teeth that have suffered decay, breaks, or other issues that have caused them to lose strength.

A crown is not a replacement for composite fillings, or a dental inlay/onlay which fill or cover only a portion of a tooth. A crown is a type of dental restoration intended to cover the entire tooth from the gum line up. Cemented onto your natural tooth, a crown effectively serves as your tooth’s new surface because it completely covers your natural tooth.

The first civilisation to use dental crowns were the Etruscans from Italy’s Tuscany region. They used ivory, gold, bone and even other human teeth. Finally, and thankfully, in the 19th century, following the advent of porcelain dentures, the porcelain crowns were invented by Charles Land in 1905. Porcelain fused to metal crowns came about in the 1950’s creating a stronger and more durable alternative to the complete porcelain version.

Crowns can be fashioned from a variety of materials including gold alloy, porcelain or ceramic, or even a combination of both! Richmond Dental can provide you with additional information on your crown options, including guidance on which type of material would work best for your crown.
